Travel to Umeå
You can easily travel to Umeå by plane, train, or boat. There are sustainable travel options, and logistic solutions facilitating transport for both people and goods — within and outside the Umeå region.
Umeå is the regional hub
Umeå is located in Västerbotten County. Umeå is the largest city in the region and a hub that connects this part of northern Europe. A place where there has always been a flow of people exchanging ideas, raw materials, and products. Umeå connects the north with the south and the east with the west.
Umeås neighboring cities
The cities closest to Umeå are Örnsköldsvik and Vaasa in Finland. Traveling between Umeå and Örnsköldsvik by train takes an hour and there are lots of people commuting between the cities — for both work and university studies. The Umeå-Vasa ferry line is served by Aurora Botnia, one of the world's most environmentally friendly passenger ships, with a capacity of 800 passengers. The journey across the Gulf of Bothnia takes approximately three and a half hours and many Finnish tourists visit Umeå for shopping, restaurants, and cultural events.
Traveling from Stockholm to Umeå
The express trains between Umeå and Stockholm takes roughly six and a half hours. There are two train stations in Umeå, Umeå C in downtown Umeå and Umeå Östra, which is adjacent to Campus Umeå. The train stations are well-connected to public transport by inner city and regional bus lines.
Flights between Umeå and Stockholm takes roughly an hour. Umeå Airport connects Umeå with the rest of Sweden, with departures to Arlanda and Bromma. The airport is 4 kilometers from downtown Umeå and is probably one of few Swedish airports where cycling is an alternative to bus transit. The bus transit connects directly to inner city public transportation. The bus transit passes Campus Umeå and the district of Ålidhem, densely populated by students.
